So Am I: Projecting Our Qualities

May 31st, 2008

There is this woman at my son’s school with whom I have a very bad human connection indeed. I think she is unapproachable, indifferent, and unfriendly. In fact, though I like a few people, there are more people in that school whom I absolutely dislike. In my book they are all indifferent, unapproachable, and unfriendly.

On the other hand I have a great human connection with my piano teacher, now a friend, who is just delightful, warm, interesting, generous, and very intelligent. Ditto for my son who is also very intelligent, sensitive, caring, loving, and absolutely hilarious.

How is that that I have great and not so great relationships with different people? What is there that makes me like and be liked as well as hated (or disliked) and hateful (or despising)? Why do I recognize negative qualities in some people and positive qualities in other people?

The answer is very simple: I am just mirroring myself in these people. As we hate to realize it, the truth is that we all have positive and negative qualities (according to our values, of course) that we project onto others, thus, some people push our buttons whereas others just delight us.

It is, thus, crucially important to know who are we exactly, so we can transform all our relationships into positive and gratifying ones. To know our qualities we need only make two lists. For each list, get a piece of paper and make a line in the middle.

In the first sheet, do the following:

1. Write on top: Qualities I appreciate in others.

2. On the left hand side of the paper, write the names of people you most admire. They can be real people or imaginary characters, dead or alive, that you have or have not known personally; it matters not.

3. On the right hand side of the paper, for each person, write all the qualities you most admire in them.

4. Keep doing this until you have written qualities for all of the people in that list.

5. Do not repeat qualities. Write them only once.

In the second piece of paper do the same, only this time, you will write: “Qualities I despise in others,” meaning all the negative qualities certain people have that you truly despise, even hate. Now, pay attention that you should not write about behavior but qualities only.

For example: Hitler = mass murderer.
Mass murderer is a behavior, not a quality. You could write instead: Hitler = unsympathetic (to put it mildly).
See the difference?

When you are done with both lists write the following at the bottom of each page:
I see these qualities in others because I too, have them.
Ouch! How can I compare myself with that despicable man?

Now is the time to reflect about each of our negative qualities, the ones we are sure NOT to have but which, indeed we do, in a subtle or not so subtle way. In our example: unsympathetic. Ok; the guy condoned the murderer of millions of people. In what way are we being and doing the same? You don’t need to go far. If you are not a vegetarian, you already have an answer. (This is a lame comparison, I know. I just want to give an example.)

See? It is not difficult at all to see where our projections go. Try it and I guarantee your relationships are about to change radically for the better.

By the way: For some reason, I can’t care less about the people in that school. I, too, am indifferent, unapproachable, and unfriendly. It is up to me to change the situation. Once I change, everything will fall into place beautifully.

Bullying and the Not for Profit Organisation

May 31st, 2008

Where there is people there is politics! Bullying is now a major workplace issue that has invaded our not for profit organisations. Take the following example.

Cheryl was the General Manager of a Not for Profit organisation in a major Australian City providing specialist supervision for young adults. She had recently received complaints of intimidation and harassment against a supervisor by an employee.

Imagine her surprise when within a week she received 3 more complaints from 3 other employees. All complaints appeared to hinge around the same behaviours.

The common thread appeared to be that the supervisor had publicly humiliated staff in front of other staff, scolded them for not doing expected work when they were not told about it, lectured them on nit picking incidences and often disappeared from the workplace for long periods of time leaving the other employees to carry the load.

This had been occurring for several years but had now come to a head.

What is Workplace Harassment?

In Queensland, Australia, the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995 employers have an obligation to ensure the health and safety of all workers by managing risks at the workplace.

1. A person is subjected to “workplace harassment” if the person is subjected to repeated behaviour, by a person, including the person’s employer or a co-worker or group of co-workers of the person that- is unwelcome and unsolicited; and
the person considers to be offensive, intimidating, humiliating or threatening; and
a reasonable person would consider to be offensive, humiliating, intimidating or threatening.

Abusing the person/s loudly, usually when others are present;

Repeated threats of dismissal or other severe punishment for no reason;

Constant ridicule and being put down;

Leaving offensive messages on email or the telephone;

Sabotaging the person’s work for example by deliberately withholding or supplying incorrect information; hiding documents or equipment;

not passing on messages; and in other ways, getting the worker into trouble;

Maliciously excluding and isolating the person/s from workplace activities;

Persistent and unjustified criticisms, usually of the nit-picking variety;

Humiliating the person/s through sarcasm, criticism and insults, often in front of customers, management or other workers;

Spreading gossip or false, malicious rumours about the person/s with an intent to cause them harm;

Singling out and treating person/s differently from others, without good reason

Effects of Workplace Harassment on the Employees and the Business

Workplace harassment has detrimental effects on workers and the workplace.

Workers who are harassed can become:

distressed, anxious, withdrawn and depressed
physically ill, sleep deprived
aggressive, vengeful
less self-confident and develop low self-esteem.

Workplace harassment may result in:

loss of trained and talented workers;
loss of profits;
reduced productivity and morale;
an unsafe working environment; and
legal costs for a workplace.

Taking the ‘Bully’ by the Horns

Cheryl was in the middle of an important change management rollout when she received these complaints and recently the board had requested an updated strategic plan. Life was hectic for this Manager, Wife and Mother.

However, Cheryl was concerned about Bobs’ behaviours and consulted her organisation’s policy and procedures to see what she should do.

There was nothing specific on workplace harassment but there was a grievance policy, which Cheryl put into action immediately.

She personally interviewed all complainants and took notes followed up by external advice.

She spoke with Bob about her concerns and the complaints she had received and after several hours discussion had obtained agreement to contract a professional mediator to facilitate the grievances and hopefully reach a positive outcome for all parties.

The day of the mediation’s arrived. Seven hours later the 3 mediation’s were completed. Bob refused to acknowledge that his behaviours were inappropriate although he did concede that he was beginning to see his behaviours might have had some effect on his staff.

The following day Cheryl requested that Bob meet with her and discuss his behaviours privately. She had discovered that two of the employees had visited their Doctors the day before and were recommended taking anti-depressants and stress leave.

Bob arrived at his meeting. Cheryl placed before him incident after incident that had come to light explaining that there was a pattern in all these behaviours.

Bob refuted each incident believing that he had done nothing wrong.

After 7 hours of interactive discussion Cheryl asked Bob to leave the room and return in an hour when she would let Bob know her decision.

Bob returned and Cheryl informed him that she considered his behaviour serious and that his employment was to be forthwith terminated for workplace harassment.

Time Passed

Within 2 weeks of Bob’s departure the workplace settled down, the 2 employees did not take stress leave or anti-depressants. Some months have now passed and the workplace continues to be a place people enjoy coming to every day without fear of harassment or intimidation.

The organisation has not had to replace the previous supervisor as the workload has easily been absorbed by the current employees now they are empowered and not harassed.

Cost

Cheryl spent 5 days solid time investigating and dealing with the harassment complaints.

The direct cost’s to the organisation was $12,000 in employee entitlements and the Mediators fees. Indirect costs amounted to the same and what about the loss in productivity, absenteeism and workplace counselling that followed?

Several staff had been traumatised which effected productivity and put at risk government funding that was an important component of the organisations’ revenue.

As this harassment had gone unreported for 2 years the personal cost to several staff had been high and this explained the high staff turnover in that period.

Summary

Do not ignore workplace harassment and think it will go away - it rarely does.
Deal with it immediately or the cost to your organisation and employees will be high both in personal, productivity and possible legal penalties and claims.

You can effectively manage workplace harassment by adopting some of the following procedures

Introduce a workplace specific harassment policy

Arrange for an in-house seminar on workplace harassment and have employees sign to say they will comply with the policy

Include in your employees employment contracts (new starts) a clause about the company’s workplace standard policy and procedures.

Appoint a workplace harassment officer.

Deal with all complaints immediately, confidentially and thoroughly.

Remember you may be vicariously liable for the actions of your employees.

Do not ignore workplace harassment and think it will go away. Silence may give the impression of tolerance and tacit acceptance.

Mind Upgrade — Face Value of Visual Communication Dynamics

May 30th, 2008

In your face marketing and selling, visual communication dynamics, overwhelmingly influence our thinking and behavior. We are dynamically visual beings by nature. The eye is the most powerful information conduit to the brain — continually feeding us images that create our perception of the world and shapes how we think, behave and respond.

We think and dream in picture and images and the words we hear are processed and transformed into mental pictures. Images and sounds dominate human communication and as consumers we have come to expect media rich, entertaining dynamic visuals in advertising and marketing materials. What was once a trip to a shopping mall to purchase goods and services has turned into a visual entertainment event.

Technology, computers, and media arts have influence several generations who have come to expect every newspaper, magazine, video, post card and direct mail letter to bloom into full living color and MTV action.

It’s no longer adequate to think that when making sales & marketing presentations, or presenting seminars, that we can communicate simply by painting word pictures and giving third party testimonials or stories of our products and services. Our customers want and expect quick conveyance of information and have a clear preference for pictures that show facts, features and benefits. Using the right visuals communicate faster, clearer, better and advantages the presenter in one-on-one presentations or group presentations.

The technology driving visual communication is only going to become more explosive for improved graphics and images that are far more effective than words or numbers for communicating concepts and ideas. Global business communication is enhanced with symbols and images and will expand the sphere of business contacts and potential business.

In this escalating, robust, explosion of visual communication, we find that, for those of us, in the presentation business - sales, marketing, customer service, negotiations, training and speaking requires new skill sets to be competitive. We must let the artist within come out and step outside the traditional box of word communications only.

Therefore, we must rewire our thinking - that is our visual thinking.

When making presentations of any kind. We have to remember that every presentation we make is not simply a matter of sharing information - it’s about communicating effectively to persuade, influence, initiate change, sell a product, motivate, and create involvement.

Here are ways to assist you in moving outside the traditional box of word communications for creating more effective visual communication dynamics.

1. Study the trends of high impact TV commercials and magazine ads. Observe the orientation and dynamics of color, design, sound, images and speed.

2. Take an existing power point presentation and redesign it using symbols and images only to covey your message. Experiment with color schemes and layouts.

3. Use 3-D graphics and java to dramatize numbers. So that they jump out at the viewer.

4. Construct the same presentation several times. Using a combination of symbols, pictures, video, java, layout, color schemes and words.

5. For international business presentations, design you presentation using the color most associated with the country you’re presenting to. Example: Mexico’s dominant colors are green and red.

Visual presentations dynamics will only become more important as technology expands global business. Media rich presentation will be a primary differentiation for those companies that adopt visual thinking.

Faulty Expectations: 4 Essential Don’ts

May 30th, 2008

The more realistic you are as you prepare for marriage, the more likely you are to have a successful one. Therefore, it is incumbent upon you to give serious consideration to your expectations of your fiancé. Are they realistic? Are they fair?

Far too many couples enter marriage with unrealistic expectations of the marriage and of each other. In more marriages than we would choose to believe, couples inability to meet the other’s expectations resulted in the marriage’s premature demise.

Here are 4 don’ts that if adhered to will avert a lot of discord and emotional turmoil in the marriage and help to make your marriage a satisfying one.

1) Don’t expect your partner to be able to read your mind. It is unfair, unrealistic and nescient. Some people get an attitude and break marital harmony because they did not get the “gift” they expected or wanted, yet they did not communicate this to their spouse. Our minds are too complex and changing for anyone to know what we are thinking. TELL your partner what you want or be open to accepting whatever is given you in the spirit in which it is given. Of course, this is not only in regards to the material but to behaviors as well. Let your partner know what your expectations are. Communicate. Communicate. Communicate.

2) Don’t think you are going to have a “perfect” marriage. To do so is to set yourself up for an enormous let-down. There is no such thing. How can anyone expect a perfect marriage when there is no perfect person? You are as imperfect as your intended wife or husband. If a person was inane enough to try to do everything you wanted them to do and behave exactly as you dictated, you would still have an imperfect marriage and one does not have to be a rocket scientist to figure out why.

3) Don’t believe your partner can make you happy. Come on now. Wake up and smell the coffee. No one has the power to make us happy. This is something we can only do for ourselves and it is a choice. For example, let’s say your new husband/wife decided to cook a special meal for you with all the trimmings. You are both surprised and delighted. Now, did he/she make you happy? NO. You made yourself happy. How? In recognizing his/her thoughtfulness in going through the trouble of creating this meal, you chose to appreciate what was done for you which had a positive affect and you felt “happy.” Take the same scenario only this time you are displeased. You don’t like what was cooked and think your spouse should have “known” this and you choose to display an attitude of disapproval. Negative feelings are evoked and what was intended to be pleasant turns ugly. Did your spouse make you unhappy? NO. You made yourself unhappy. How? By chosing to be non-appreciative and negative in your thinking which resulted in a negative affect, “unhappiness or displeasure.” In other words, how each individual choose to interpret events, behaviors, communications determines how each individual will “feel”. Negative feelings cannot be produced by positive thoughts.

4) Don’t be on police stake-out patrol. No human wants to feel they are being watched 24/7 or need to give an account for every place they go or justify for everything they do. Nor do they want you following them like a shadow. No couple want their partner with them all the time. We all need space to grow, space to share with others, space to be alone. Don’t expect your partner to want to do everything with you. If you have trust issues, deal with it BEFORE you say “I Do.”

Fan Fiction - To Do or Not to Do

May 30th, 2008

Fan fiction is fiction written by people who enjoy a film, novel, or other media work, using the characters and situations developed in it to create new plots in which to use these characters.

Fan fiction has been going on for decades, centuries, I’m sure even millenniums. It could be noted as far back as the ancient Egyptians. For example, the ancient Egyptians lauded many gods in their society and even wrote literature on these gods, such as Horis and Isis. When the Egyptians came in contact with the Greeks many centuries later, the Greeks picked up some of the Egyptian gods as their own and wrote stories on them. When the Romans came into the picture, they picked up some of the Greek gods as their own and wrote new plots for them. Up to this day many of the mythological gods people are aware of are usually seen as Roman or Greek myths and fiction. Some people don’t even think to link them back to Egypt. Of course this is thousands of years ago when copyright didn’t exist and the population of the world was a lot smaller. There wasn’t any technology like the Internet. Most literature creators at that time probably did not worry too much about infringement. I mean, it’s not like the Egyptians could have rode to Greece in their chariots and accuse them of violating copyright laws. However, even back then people faced severe punishment for changing or misrepresenting a story or literature renowned in their society, and the law was not kind on what we call fan fiction today.

We are in the twenty-first century; technology is at an all time high and increasing. Fans can get access to almost any media work published in an instant. And, the copyright laws of course still favor the originator. Okay, what about fanfiction in the twenty first century? The simple answer is it is still frowned upon. Then, is there any spot for fan fiction publishing? Of course there is. What I believe is that fanfiction keeps the world of literature revolving. I’ve observed that this is especially true for popular published literature. Usually when a book hits the shelf or a story is told, may even be on historical facts, despite the popularity and liking of the story, everyone is not satisfied. Many fans may think to themselves, “what if it happened this way?” Some fans even go out and create a fiction based on how they think the story should have happened. Some of these fans share their version with others in chat groups, message boards and so on. The effect of these fans actions? We now have more text and a wider audience.

If fan fiction makes the world of storytelling go round should fanfiction be allowed to broaden audiences and possibly allow economic growth due to the purchasing of the fictions by the curious minded? Or maybe the stories should be left as was created. But what if the story is unfinished? Should the curiosity of the audience be quenched by imaginative family members, friends, hired publishers or most of all, fans? I believe this is up to the originator to decide. If the originator doesn’t want any changes to his story then the fans have to respect that.

Due to infringement many creators are afraid to tamper with any original copyright work. Nobody wants to get in trouble for plagiarism. What creators have to know is that fan fiction is usually frowned upon when it misrepresents the original character and mostly when the creator tries to commercialize it. You can think of it this way, it is like taking money from your boss. Most publishers are cool when fan fiction is in the closet, meaning hidden, not commercialized and intended for your group of people or family like setting. Doing this is just like telling a story to your family or friends.

Fan fiction creators must remember that the only reason your fan fiction exists is because of the originator of the fiction or story. Fan fictions have an audience because the original had an audience. As mentioned before, think of it like working for a boss. People are usually at their job because their boss hired them. I’m saying this because writing fanfiction is a good way to get noticed as a writer or creator. Some people make a living off writing fanfiction. This is alright as long as fan fiction creators respect the requests of the original author or publisher and not try to commercialize it.

Winclear :Timeline On The History On Internet

May 29th, 2008

Many people ask the question of whether cookies are harmful for their computers. The answer is generally no, but it is not nearly as straightforward as it sounds. While cookies are often stored in text files, only used to track information that is already provided to various websites, and are set to expire in short periods of time, they can be used for malicious purposes in certain instances. You will need to work with cookies - however, if you know when to delete them and when not to, you can still enjoy the conveniences they provide. They think that keylogging their children’ online activity equals to spying and that such harsh supervision in not required for their beloved ones.

What you should install on your PC is Anti-Spyware software as it will locate and destroy any Spyware that if finds on your computer. There are also a number of programs that claim to be anti-spyware that do not work. Worse these programs actually add more spyware to your system. Data loggers, key loggers are just a few programs which harvest info from your computer. Winclear is the only program created specially to auto remove such spywares. Some people mistakenly assume that anti-virus software protects them from keyloggers and Spyware. That is why every computer owner needs winclear.

Protect With Winclear :Metacrawler Search History
If your account was compromised while AccSent was enabled, there is a high probability that you either have a security hole in your computer, which allowed hackers to take control of your computer or you have a Trojan virus, spyware or keylogger software installed on your computer because someone not only had access to your e-gold passphrase, they also had access to your email address password. Winclear is the only software which is capable of removing keylogger programs. In addition bulky information such as IP addresses and browser preferences for a website can be stored in a cookie saving time when loading a website you often visit. Winclear has been the industry leader in fighting keyloggers for the last 8 years.

Winclear:
Otherwise a hacker or identity thief only needs to discover one password and then try it out on some bank accounts email accounts web forums or anything else associated with your name. That is the reason why you need Winclear installed onto your computer. Keyloggers as it is clear from the name of the program log keystrokes –but that’s not all. Fishing Flies 101

May 28th, 2008

The world of fly fishing can be a confusing one, beginners are
forced to learn new lingo, new techniques, and digest new info
regarding fish and their behavior. Of the years we have
published many articles to help beginners and veterans alike,
they are archived at http://www.bigyflyco.com for your use.

This article is an overview of fly fishing flies, and mostly fly fishing
flies used primarily for trout. Although we will touch on other
species as well. When you browse a fly shop, a catalog or an
online fly shop, you will see flies organized into a few broad
categories. And then perhaps sub-divided again into smaller
categories. But lets us first look at these broad categories.
Generally you will see Nymphs, Dry Flies, Streamers and nowadays
probably Beadhead Nymphs or just Beadheads. First off all these
are common trout flies, and many can be used for other species
as well, streamers are especially useful for virtually all game
fish.

Nymphs-are flies used below the surface of the water, fish
consume anywhere from 70-90% of their diet underwater, so nymphs
tend to be the most common type of fly used. Most of the time
nymphs are used in conjunction with weight placed somewhere from
1-3 feet up the tippet (leader) from the fly. This way the nymph
will sink under the water to where an eagerly awaiting fish will
oblige your desire and chomp it. And really that is all you ever
need to know to fly fish like a master. OK there is a little
more to it than that. Popular nymphs include: Hare’s Ear,
Pheasant Tail, Prince Nymphs, Stonefly nymphs, and Copper Johns.

Beadheads- Beadheads or beadhead nymphs migrated to America from
Europe and became wildly popular. (Well not the actual nymphs,
but the fly patterns.) Unfortunately fish are not stupid, and
while they are still the most popular category of pattern today,
they are not the panacea we all though twenty years ago. Yes,
fish do evolve. Beadheads are simply nymphs with a little,
usually gold bead, by the eye of the hook. They allow faster
sinking, a different ’swimming action’, and the bright bead
attracts fish. Popular beadheads include all the nymphs named
above with a beadhead tied in front of them.

Dry Flies–Dry Flies are the classic fly requiring the graceful
casting that most non-fly fishers think of as fly fishing. Dry
flies are tied to float on top of the water, and provide for
remarkable strikes from fish as they rise to the surface eagerly
attack your offering. While being the most dramatic form of fly
fishing it also requires the most stealth and patience and can
cause the most frustration. But the rewards are exhilarating.
Popular dry flies include: Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulator,
Wulffs, Parachutes.

Streamers-Streamers are ‘flies’ or patterns tied to imitate
smaller fish, leeches, and crustaceans. To think that fish only
eat insects is foolish snobbery, although a thought maintained
by some. Fish eat indiscriminately, and that includes everything
available to them, even the bit of your sandwich that fell into
the water. There are times and places where minnows and leeches
make up the majority of a game fish diet, and unlike many nymphs
and dry flies, streamer type food is available year around.
Popular streamers include Woolly Bugger, Muddler Minnows,
Egg-Sucking Leech, Mickey Finns. Many of these patterns are
available either as a beadhead or the similar conehead.

These categories can be broken down again, and even again. Dry
flies in particular have a wide variety of sub-categories,
including parachutes, which is taking standard dry flies and
tying the hackle in a different fashion. You can also throw in a
terrestrial category which is nothing more than a dry fly, whose
origin was not the water. Such as ants, hoppers or beetles.

There are also specialty flies and these are generally
classified by fish species instead of fly type. The exception is
egg flies, which just look like fish eggs and while they are
widely used for salmon and or steelhead they are also popular
for trout. Besides salmon/steelhead flies, there are also bass
flies which are also used for pike and other fish. And saltwater
flies, which once again can be broken down further into species.
As these are highly specialized, the fly angler interested in
them probably already has an extensive knowledge for their area,
if not they should consult an guide or fly shop in their local
vicinity.

Allergy Approaches through Lifestyle

May 28th, 2008

What we do is just as powerful as what we eat to keep ourselves operating at our very best health. This applies to taking care during allergy season as well. So, again, instead of just popping a pill and trekking ahead as usual. Try taking care instead.

1. Know Your Season - If you know exactly what allergy triggers you are
susceptible to (get tested by your doctor or carefully chart your reactions this year)
you can take extra care by following this seasonal guide:

*Alder - Feb, Mar, Apr, May

*Hazelnut - Feb, Mar, Apr, May

*Elm - Feb, Mar, Apr, May

*Birch - Mar, April, May June

*Maple - Mar, April, May June

*Oak - Mar, April, May June

*Sorrel - April, May, June, July, Aug, Sept

*Stinging Nettle - April, May, June, July, Aug, Sept

*Beech - April, May June

*Spruce - April, May June

*Buttercup - May, June, July

*Mugwort - July, Aug, Sept

2. Keep Windows Closed - it may seem simple and you may feel like you
are missing the “fresh air of spring”, but it could save you money and sneeze power.
Secure windows of your home and car during your “tough” season.

3. Showers and Baths - Take a shower at night to remove any pollen that
may have collected in your hair or nails during the day. Take a HOT bath to raise
your body temperature to help the body purge toxins. Add the essential oils (all
natural, no artificial fragrances) of camphor, menthol and eucalyptus to help with
decongestion (You can also mix these oils with sweet almond oil and apply under
the nose and on the neck during the day for easier breathing).

Visit Scottsdale, Arizona

May 28th, 2008

Scottsdale is located east of downtown Phoenix. It is the center of so much in Arizona! - There MOST culture, BEST dining, and the superlative EVERYTHING you might expect from one of the state’s most affluent areas. Tempe and Mesa are to the south of Scottsdale, separated by the amazing Salt River. The Salt River Indian Community is confined to the city’s eastern border.

Many Scottsdale residents use the Loop 101 to get around the Valley of the Sun. The Loop 101 travels north and south before changing direction from east to west. Loop 202 runs along the south of Scottsdale. Gorgeous desert views, warm weather, and resort/spa style living are just some of the reasons people are elevated to the city of Scottsdale.

There is also the handy Scottsdale Airport for jet setters who have the means to carter and the need to do so.
Climate

The climate is typical of the southwest. There is a mild winter that is balanced by a long hot, dry summer. Many have claimed that the dry, hot summer conditions have helped to relive many of their allergy symptoms.

Summer days are clear and spectacular and the temperatures are truly remarkable. Spring and autumn are mild transitions into the other seasons. There is a brief monsoon season that is truly extraordinary.

Scottsdale History

Many date the city to 1888. In that year Army Chaplin Winfield Scott arrived and began irrigating the land to support a small farming community.

Olive trees planted by Scott, himself can still be seen today in downtown Scottsdale. The trees are located along the center of Second Street and down Civic Center Boulevard south down to Osborn.

These trees were planted to indicate the border of his original 40 acre orange grove.

Then in 1894 and eastern banker bought up the land, subdivided it and then cleverly marketed it under the name Scottsdale. And folks bought it!

After World War II, the area grew into a small artist’s enclave. You can still se remnants of the days when the area was alive with creativity in the dusty relics lining roads and populating pawn shop shelf space. If you’re lucky you may see a street musician leaving the area to go to work. It is a place for wealthy living and all the artists there now have bank accounts.

Scottsdale Entertainment

Scottsdale’s motto of “The West’s most Western town” is evident when you walk its downtown shops. Shops with open doors and wide sidewalks give the welcoming feeling of the old west. And if you are of merely ordinary means you may feel as though some merchants are engaging in a little rustling!

But remember, you are in Scottsdale and there is a highly selective group of folks who can, and do, purchase here with truly remarkable frequency.

Scottsdale is home to more than half of the Valley of the Sun’s premier resorts. Fine art galleries, cultural facilities, unique shopping centers, upbeat nightlife, and well known restaurants are all part of the Scottsdale.

Scottsdale Fashion Square is THE fashion stop in Phoenix- and this entire state, for that matter.

There is so much to do in Scottsdale! A wide range of community and cultural facilities, include art galleries, libraries, theaters, and museums are found in Scottsdale. Westworld is a major equestrian development that offers numerous events throughout the year.

Events ranging from Barrett-Jackson Car Auction to the Arabian Horse Show are located at Westworld. Scottsdale Center for the Arts has room for theater seating, exhibit halls, and a cinema. Scottsdale residents have many choices when it comes to entertainment.

There are four main sections of downtown Scottsdale:

• The Historic Old Town Scottsdale is the original town site with a mix of historic locations and shops, boutiques, and restaurants.

• Main Street Arts and Antiques District is a smaller section with fine restaurants, specialty shops, and art/antiques.

• Marshall Way Arts District is known for its Art Walks, diversity of media, and many local/national/internationally recognized artist galleries.

• The Fifth Avenue Shops is a combination of boutiques, Native American arts and crafts, and restaurants. It is an area that Scottsdale residents enjoy spending time shopping and browsing.

Scottsdale Outdoor Recreation

Easy equation.

On the professional level there is the Scottsdale Open which is among the must-play tournaments for all the world’s top ranked players. Look at the leader board to follow your favorite player.

Golf is also popular at the club level and Scottsdale has over 40 expertly planned and maintained courses to choose from. Finding a course is easy. However, deciding which golf course to play first is one decision that many Scottsdale residents spend time planning.

Indian Bend Wash is a centerpiece for Scottsdale. The wash stretches north and south for several miles through most of the south central part of Scottsdale. It creates a green ribbon of grass. Along Indian Bend Wash, there are several parks, bike paths, fishing lakes, and recreational complexes. This area is a popular spot all year round for visitors and residents alike.
